FPL Wrapped - Our Gameweek 6 Teams

Here are our FPL Teams for Gameweek 6

Hello everyone! All 3 of us have the wildcard active ahead of Gameweek 6, and the template is looking very strong. Let’s go through the teams and discuss what could change before the deadline.

Gameweek 6 Fixtures

Every week Ross discusses 1 key FPL question in detail!

To triple captain Haaland or not, that is the question.

The key question to discuss this week is whether you should triple captain Haaland if you are not using your wildcard or free hit instead. Let’s do a classic pros and cons table:

Pros

  • Haaland is in a ridiculous run of form and has extremely high chance of scoring 1+ goal (59% bookies odds).

  • Burnley are the worst team in the league this season for xGC and the only team to have conceded over 10xG.

  • A lot of the big FPL scores every year are scored towards the start of the season, these tend to slow down as we get further into the season.

  • It is a low upside chip anyway, why not just play it in what feels like an obvious week and move on!

Cons

  • Haaland is according to Pep, not fully fit. Even if we have a guarantee he starts, how many minutes does he receive? On the odd chance he does not start, do you have a vice captain you’d be happy being your triple captain?

  • Burnley are a very “low-block” team. I haven’t looked into the data, but I feel like Haaland is usually most explosive in games where he has lots of space to run into, such as against Man United.

  • Forwards receive a maximum of 13 points for a brace, midfielders can receive up to 16 points. Midfielders with similar % odds of scoring 1+ goal will naturally have a higher ceiling, especially with additional assists.

Overall, I think that if I did not have the wildcard chip active, I would just go for it. If you do play the chip, give some serious thought to your vice captain if we approach the deadline and Haaland is still an injury doubt, just in case.

Bench Boost

Wildcard active and the templatiest of all template wildcards…
I am trying now with this to think as long term and as future focused with this team as I can. Hence why I have not actually gone for a £4.0m Defender as I just think the likes of Richards and Andersen are great long term enables and cover in the event of an emergency.

In terms of what is likely to change… I would say Gabriel, Raya, Stach and Richards are the 4 players that are less than 80% locked in for me. I will 100% have one Arsenal defensive player but with Raya being a 2 vs 6 and Gabriel not normally having good DEFCON appeal whilst both being very expensive I am considering downgrading to upgrade elsewhere.

That would likely be for Pope or Dan Burn. Newcastle sit top for xGC so far this season and have a decent enough run of fixtures although not comparable to how good Arsenal’s are.

In terms of Richards, I think he is likely to play just 3 times in the next 15 gameweeks for me if everything goes to plan. Which does not seem worth it. However, if it does not go to plan than having him as a realible bench option is a great place to be in.

Finally is Stach. I am not in love with this pick at all. Is a perfect first sub but also means I will rarely want to play him even if he has a good fixture. Would I be better off with someone like a Xhaka or a KDH in this position.

The wildcard is active, and yes, the team is essentially the same as Harry and Oscar. For those that think this is planned, believe me, it is not. I would rather wildcard at a different time to them, and I would rather own different players. But it would also be silly to change players just because other people also own them.

That being said, there are certainly some players that I am still tempted to change, and some that I would love to add, so here are the list of players that are not in this draft, that might be there by the GW6 deadline:

Donnarumma, Pope, Burn, Van Dijk, Richards, Saka, Salah.

Basically, I am tempted to replace one of my Arsenal defensive options with someone from Man City, Liverpool, or Newcastle because: a) Keep the 3rd Arsenal spot open; b) Gabriel isn’t great for DEFCON and Raya doesn’t make many saves. But then again, clean sheets are worth 2x that of DECON, and Arsenal will keep many clean sheets!

I am also tempted to change Gyökeres and Stach for Saka and Foster, and fund the remaining budget by downgrading Tarkowski to Richards. I love Saka as an option, but you probably agree that option A is stronger than option B:

A) Tarkowski, Stach, Gyökeres vs. B) Richards, Saka, Foster.

So, as much as I love Saka, I’m not sure I am fully there on pivoting to him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the exact 15 I go into the GW6 deadline with, but there is always the chance of a few last minute changes, especially if Haaland is genuinely injured and ruled out going into GW6.

Wildcard

Last gameweek was pretty disastrous so the decision to wildcard back on Saturday quickly looked the right call, with a lot of changes made to my team and transfers saved. Coming out of the wildcard I plan to bench boost in GW7 where I’ll have 3 rolled transfers as well, with the aim to rolling further. Gameweek 8 and 9 look nice for the bench boost as well though I’m not very keen on the gap given there’s a break, plus Ndiaye has Man City and Andersen has Arsenal in GW8. I dislike how “template” the team is but have found it pretty much picks itself, and what I can say for sure is it will be a matter of time before myself, Harry and Ross split off down different paths again. They’ve left a third Arsenal slot open which is something I’ve considered, as I may wish to get Saka in if Palmer’s injury is ongoing and if he’ll miss SUN (H). No concerns about Haaland’s flag, expecting him to start after getting midweek off. I’m sure Pep will give us some vague response when asked!

Harry’s top 3 Captaincy choices this week!

  1. Haaland vs BUR (H)
Is Haaland a doubt… I mean I guess slightly as he is flagged and did not feature midweek. However, I would not worry about it at all and he remains the best captain at home to Burnley who sit bottom for xG so far this season!

  2. Salah vs CRY (a)
Despite some slightly wide performances from Salah so far this season he is always able to get returns when you need and is only ever one game away from a haul. Crystal Palace have been very good and are unbeaten in 17 so it is unlikely to be that high scoring but backing Salah is never a bad idea.

  3. Joao Pedro vs BHA (H)
The final spot is Joao Pedro but was almost Bruno Fernandes against Brentford who have conceded a lot of chances this season. Joao Pedro has been very involved for Chelsea whilst Palmer has been out and I expect that to remain the case. A midweek rest will do Chelsea a lot of good as well.

Here are the results from mid-week, along with the goalscorers:

  • Burnley 1-2 Cardiff (Flemming)

  • Fulham 1-0 Cambridge (Smith Rowe)

  • Lincoln 1-2 Chelsea (George, Buonanotte)

  • Wolves 2-0 Everton (Munetsi, Arokodare)

  • Liverpool 2-1 Southampton (Ekitike, Isak)

  • Barnsley 0-6 Brighton (Gomez x4, Howell, Ayari)

  • Huddersfield 0-2 Man City (Foden, Savinho)

  • Newcastle 4-1 Bradford (Joelinton x2, Osula x2)

  • Spurs 3-0 Doncaster (Palhinha, Johnson, own goal)

  • Port Vale 0-2 Arsenal (Eze, Trossard)

  • Real Betis 2-2 Nott’m Forest (Igor Jesus x2)

A couple of other important notes from the games:

  • Saka started for Arsenal and played 63 mins.

  • Eze started for Arsenal and played 81 mins.

  • Haaland was not in the squad for Man City.

  • Foden played 77 mins a fully rotated City team, but did manage a goal and assist.

  • Ekitike received a red card and will be suspended for GW6.

FPL is a very individual game, and your strategy will depend on your current team, your managerial style, and your risk appetite. People play FPL for different reasons too - some play for the enjoyment of owning players they like, others play to win their mini-leagues, and some might play to ‘optimise’ points every week. There is no right way to play and as such no right decision to make around transfers and chips.

Play your own game, own your decisions, and trust yourself!
