FPL Wrapped - Our Gameweek 5 Teams

Our FPL Teams and Plans for Gameweek 5

Hello everyone! GW5 does not promise to be a particularly exciting week. There are lots of fixtures where clean sheets and goals are difficult to call, and many people are waiting for GW6 to play their chips. That being said, there is still plenty to discuss, so let’s jump into it!

Gameweek 5 Fixtures

Every week we discuss 1 key FPL question in detail!

We are adding a new section to the newsletter where I (Ross) will discuss one of the key topics of the week, and this week the question is:

“Is it worth wildcarding in GW5 or delaying the wildcard until GW7 or GW8 so that we can triple captain Haaland in GW6?” Essentially, avoiding a wildcard in GW6 so that you can play the triple captain chip.

Whilst technically for GW6, this may impact your decisions this week, especially as a lot of people are considering rolling the transfer.

For me, the triple captain and bench boost chips are significantly weaker than the wildcard and free hit chips, even if you absolutely nail them. The wildcard in particular is categorically the most important chip to get right.

As a result, I would never entertain wildcarding in a weaker GW just so that I could triple captain in a specific week. The triple captain, for me, should fit in and around your other chips and plans. Haaland will face Sunderland and Leeds in GW13, GW15 and GW19, Palmer faces Sunderland at home in GW9 - there are plenty of other nice opportunities for the chip.

That being said, if you think your team could do with a wildcard this GW, or you think delaying it until GW7 or GW8 could work well, and as a by-product you open yourself up to TC Haaland in GW6, then that is great news and I would go for it.

There is also a discussion to be had about whether this is a “Haaland game”. Haaland traditionally does well when he has lots of space to run into (such as in the Man Utd game), and Burnley will not defend in that way. I’m not sure I buy into that too much, but I do think Burnley could potentially frustrate Haaland and limit his potential somewhat.

TLDR: If you are not playing another chip in GW6, I would triple captain Haaland, but do not sacrifice other chips for the sake of it.

So I will keep it short this week. I do not like my team so as a result I plan on rolling my transfer… Enough is Enough!

No but seriously, I do not think there is an obvious move for 1 free transfer this week so rolling and having 2 to buy Haaland in GW6 either for free or on wildcard is the plan. More Aston Villa disappointment incoming!

Then it just leaves the bench boost. I am 75% sure I will just play it and get it over with this week.

I am lining up in a 4-4-2 this week, and as much as I don’t think the team looks terrible for GW5, it certainly could do with a wildcard. I am missing many players who look like great owns: Haaland, Gyökeres, João Pedro, Palmer, Semenyo, Ndiaye, Arsenal defence etc etc.

That being said, GW5 is not the week to pivot to then above players, considering many of them have tough fixtures and Arsenal face off against Man City. As a result, I will be looking to wildcard in GW6, currently 90% chance of me doing so.

With that in mind, I am looking to roll the transfer this week. Even if I decide not to wildcard and free hit or use transfers instead, having 2 free transfers next week will be valuable.

I’ll be sending my first GW6 wildcard draft in Monday’s FPL Wrapped Premium newsletter. If you have not yet seen, we release an additional newsletter every Monday with audio content, our early plans, and more. 67 points and a green arrow last week. It’s the final week with the disastrous Rogers + Watkins pairing. This might sound quite surprising, but I’m actually considering a bench boost this week and I’ll do my best to explain why.

I’ll be wildcarding in GW6, the players I really want are: Raya, Gabriel, Palmer, Bruno, Semenyo, Gyokeres, Haaland. However, I will need a strong enough bench for the bench boost which means a third forward like Strand Larsen or Thiago. Having either of them eats up too much budget and makes it impossible to own all the players in my list above. It’s just about doable if I go for Burnley’s Foster who is 5m and aim for a GW8 bench boost, but I’m stuck with 0.6m invested in a third forward I’ll basically never ever use. I do think it’s the most overrated chip, or perhaps joint with triple captain, free hit and wildcard are extremely powerful and infinitely better than the other two.

Of course if Murillo’s a doubt I won’t even entertain the bench boost so let’s see what’s said in the presser. I suppose what I’m saying is it boils down to wanting more money invested in my starting 11 and less on my bench, for all I know if I spent money on someone like Thiago or Foster I’m stuck with them for 10 gameweeks and I don’t like either particularly, I like Strand Larsen a lot as subscribers of my channel will know but will he even be available? A lot going on in my head compared to previous weeks haha.

One thing is for certain - I will be rolling this week, which gives me 3 free transfers heading into the wildcard with the aim to rolling further to at least 4, hopefully 5. Salah captain, easy choice. Good luck all!

Harry’s top 3 Captaincy choices this week!

  1. Salah vs EVE (H)
Salah looked back to his best in the Champions League midweek and in a Gameweek where captaincy feels quite difficult with it being the lowest projected goal in a Gameweek since April 2023 according to RobT on twitter, the ever reliable Salah will be a favourite.

  2. Palmer vs MUN (A)
Outside of Salah, no one has a stand out combination of fixture and form. However, Palmer scored on his return off the bench in Gameweek 4 plus in the Champions league against Bayern Munich midweek and had one ruled out for a marginal offside. He did hold his groin at the end of the match so keep an eye on this but up against a Manchester United defence that looks… weak.

  3. Gakpo vs EVE (H)
This is trying to find a 3rd respectable candidate. Given Ekitike and Isak feel like they are beginning to share minutes, Gakpo feels the safest whilst also having a good return. He also has a great record at home with 6 goals and 2 assists in his last 8 matches at home.

Now, I do not have Haaland in here. ARS (A) against Gabriel and Saliba is probably enough to look elsewhere if you own him. However, his form is undeniable and is not a bad option if you do not have Salah.

@RobtFPL has this as the lowest projected goals per match in a Gameweek since April 2023!

Disaster of the week goes to James with 29 points and Haaland last on the bench for some reason, 29K to 1.5M red arrow.

Whilst everything is team dependent, unless you need to use a transfer or want to get aggressive with your moves, this does very much feel like a week where rolling the transfer isn’t going to be a bad move at all.

Whether you are looking to wildcard in GW6, pivot to Haaland with free transfers, or even if your team already looks good, carrying an extra free transfer is never a bad thing.
